Overview

The Metadata Section includes properties that identify or describe the book. The data is stored in the EPUB file as metadata.

Properties

Author

Use the Author property to define the author of the book. This is typically your own name.

Author (File As)

Use the Author (File As) property to define the sort version of the author's name. This value is stored in the metadata for the book. If you submit the book to an online publisher, it may use the "File As" version of the title for sorting the book by its author.

If the author's name is "John Doe", set the Author (File As) property to "Doe, John".

Publisher

Use the Publisher property to identify the publisher of the book. If you are working with a publisher, specify the company name here. If you are publishing the book yourself, set the publisher to your own name, or follow the guidelines provided by your distributor, if any. This value is stored in the metadata for the book and included on the Title Page.

Publisher Address

Use the Publisher Address property to specify the address of the publisher of the book. This value is included on the Title Page.

Subject

Use the Subject property to identify the topic or subject matter of the book. This value is stored in the metadata for the book.

Use the Copyright property to set the copyright text for the book. This value is stored in the metadata for the book and included on the Title Page.

For example, you might set the value to:

Copyright (C) 2023 [your-name-here]".

Enter the HTML © entity if you want to use the "©" character rather than "(C)":

Copyright © 2023 [your-name-here]".

Identifier Properties

Your book must have two distinct identifiers, one for the EPUB version and one for the MOBI version. The identifiers may be either UUIDs or ISBNs. The identifiers are stored in the metadata for the book and may be included on the Title Page.

For self-published books, it's common to use a unique identifier called a UUID. Gedcom Publisher will generate two UUIDs for you, and you do not need to do anything to use them. If you use the File > Save As... command to make a copy of your Gedcom Publisher file (.gpfile), you should update the UUID values.

For books published by a commercial publisher, you will often use an "International Standard Book Number", or ISBN. (Wikipedia) There is a fee associated with acquiring an ISBN.

If you have ISBNs for your book, change the Identifier Type to ISBN and enter the number in the ISBN textbox. Repeat those steps for the MOBI identifier.
